Solar Energy is renewable and environment friendly.

Solar power is so affordable and environmentally friendly, that even the country’s largest companies are turning to it to power their buildings. Verizon, a major telecommunications corporation in the U.S., has recently announced that it will be adding another $40 million to its green energy program launched last year. This new investment will allow the company to expand its solar power installations on eight of its network facilities in five states across the nation.

With these new installations, Verizon will add 10.2 MW of solar power to its eight solar powered facilities, nearly doubling the amount of power currently generated, according to Datacenter Dynamics.

Verizon becomes a solar power leader
After this new expansion, Verizon is set to be ranked among the nation’s top 20 corporationswith the highest number of solar installations. Verizon stated that it has invested a total of approximately $140 million in energy efficiency for its sites located in California, New York, Maryland, Massachusetts, and New Jersey. The company is also well on its way to reaching its goal of installing 25 MW of renewable energy by the end of 2014.

The amount of energy generated by the new solar installations will be enough to power 8,500 homes annually, according to Datacenter Dynamics. Installations will include several ground level photovoltaic systems and a rooftop panel installation on a parking structure.

Verizon also takes advantage of the environmental benefits and cost of solar power by relying on 26 solar-assisted cell sites to help power a portion of its wireless network in remote areas of the western US. These solar powered cell sites have aided Verizon in its goal of reducing carbon emissions produced specifically by TB of data flowing through Verizon’s global wired and domestic wireless networks by 50 percent by 2020.

How will this affect communities?
Verizon is not only representing the benefits that come from relying on solar power for businesses, but is also lending a hand to the creation of a cleaner environment for the communities it serves.

“Our investment in on-site green energy is improving the quality of life in the communities we serve by reducing CO2 levels and reducing strain on commercial power grids, while increasing our energy efficiency,” said James Gowen, Verizon’s chief sustainability officer, according to Hydro Fuel News.

The news source reported that within the coming year, the company’s solar power systems will allow the company to reduce its total carbon dioxide emissions by around 22,000 metric tons, which is the same as removing 5,000 cars from the road every year.
